Although most people don’t give it much consideration, commodities and natural resources are the lifeblood of civilization and make our modern world possible.

From creating and powering technology, allowing sprawling cities to exist, to providing a store of value in times of uncertainty, to providing the very sustenance that keeps our hearts beating, and much more, the resources here on earth are truly essential to our survival and our development as a species.

My name is Jesse Day and I will be your host as we explore the far corners of the world to uncover the mysteries and miracles hiding in plain sight, that we seldom consider as we go about our lives.

Places like the great oil fields of Baku in Azerbaijan, the vast uranium deposits of Canada’s Athabasca Basin, the fading coal mines in the beautiful Appalachian mountains of America, and so much more.

In addition to discussing the great benefits of these resources, we will also dig deep into the controversial side of commodities, such as the seemingly endless international conflicts that surround oil production, the environmental damage inflicted by coal, and the dangers of nuclear war made possible by uranium production.

So join me, on a journey across the globe and throughout history as we trace the origins of natural resources and their role in the world today, and the future that lies ahead. Welcome to Commodity Culture.
