Gardening has not been easy for us, but we can say proudly that we’re getting better and things are improving. This year we set a goal to plant something in all the raised beds and unfortunately that just didn’t happen. One of our struggles has been prioritizing the procurement of dirt ($$) as well as the daily fight to keeps weeds and grasses from reclaiming what was once a horse pasture. It’s a lot of work but the reward of picking your own vegetables is well worth it in my opinion.
That’s not to say we didn’t have some success this year. Our cucumbers did great, we’ve had lots of heatless jalepenos, a few okra, and a whole jumble of cherry tomatoes.
Speaking of tomatoes, next year we’re going to change up our plan for supporting our tomato plants. We’ve tried the bamboo cage, which didn’t do great, and this year we tried to stake them up, which just left everything in a huge pile and didn’t really work out. Next year we’re going to build a trellis system and use string to support the plants. We’ll be focusing on fewer tomato plants per bed to help with spacing while also adding some onions as companion plants. I’m really excited to get this underway.
We plan on adding a few more cattle panel trellises to the beds and maybe even add more raised beds if we can get what already have under control (fingers crossed). Thanks for coming on this journey with us! If you want to see more be sure to subscribe. See y’all soon!
