The wave of military coups sweeping through West Africa, especially in countries formerly under French colonial rule, has raised serious concerns and provoked debate. Is this disturbing trend a direct result of the French colonial legacy? Since 1990, Francophone countries have been the primary stage for coups in sub-Saharan Africa, with allegations of French interference fueling unrest. Countries such as Niger, Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso, and Chad have witnessed their armies seize control, with claims that they're breaking free from French chains. Accusations against France are many. Leaders like Colonel Abdoulaye Maiga of Mali have publicly condemned France for its alleged neocolonialist policies. Burkina Faso and Niger have taken radical steps to dissociate from France by ending military agreements and instigating anti-French sentiment among their citizens. Understanding today's animosity requires delving into history. French colonialism was characterized by repressive policies, economic control, and political manipulations. Even after independence, many African nations were tethered to France through economic and military agreements. François-Xavier Verschave’s term "Françafrique" unveils the shadowy post-colonial relationship between France and Africa. Corruption scandals, misappropriation of funds, and the bolstering of autocratic regimes have tainted France's image and strained relations. Increasingly, French military interventions have proven inadequate against growing Islamist insurgencies in the Sahel region. The inability of France to ensure stability and safety for its former colonies has sowed seeds of doubt and dissatisfaction.
