Carbon dating

Carbon dating, also known as radiocarbon dating, is a method used to determine the age of organic materials by measuring the amount of carbon-14 isotopes they contain. Carbon-14 is a radioactive isotope of carbon that is present in the atmosphere and is incorporated into living organisms. When an organism dies, it stops taking in carbon-14, and the isotope starts to decay at a known rate. By comparing the remaining carbon-14 levels in a sample to the initial levels in the atmosphere, scientists can estimate the age of the material. This technique is particularly useful for dating archaeological and geological specimens up to around 50,000 years old.
