Keir Starmer needs to read the Good Friday Agreement.

Clumsy comments from Keir Starmer on the subject of an Irish reunification referendum imply he isn't on top of his brief.
Right, so the Good Friday Agreement, probably the single greatest achievement of the Blair years, the warmongering blood-stained Labour leader proving he could do the whole peace thing when he wanted to, though really the credit lies with the late Mo Mowlam as far as the Westminster government’s involvement goes and her team, which included a certain chap called Jeremy Corbyn. Well the heir to Blair Sir Kid Starver has been opening his mouth without thinking again and might have implied he’s prepared to breach the Good Friday Agreement should he reach power. And you thought it was just the Tories threatening peace in Northern Ireland with their desire to bin the Human Rights Act! So what’s the craic then Damo? Well instead of this being an issue of human rights, the threat from Starmer comes from the prospect of a referendum on Irish reunification, the possibility of Northern Ireland rejoining the Republic of Ireland and leaving the union. The prospect of this happening is built into the Good Friday Agreement. Now I don’t claim to be anyway an expert on these things, but Northern Ireland came into being in 1921 in order to functionally segregate Protestants from Catholics, but of course Catholics still lived in Northern Ireland. This was a political border set up for people to live by I suppose you could almost compare it to Israel and Palestine in a way given that people were forced to live under certain circumstances regardless of backgrounds and so it’s probably little surprise neither example ended up a peaceful set up. For the sake of moving the conversation on here I’m not going to dwell on the Troubles or Orange Order marches or any of that, tensions between Catholic and Protestant communities are well documented, but the Good Friday Agreement, really two agreements as it is, came along and once implemented brought an end to the Troubles there. But it’s a clause in that that has now brought up this issue relating to Starmer. The 2021 Northern Ireland census revealed that although Northern Ireland was once dominated by Protestants, it no longer is. Catholics now outnumber them. Constitutional change therefore in theory is closer than ever and it only requires a simple majority of people in Northern Ireland or the perception of one by the UK government, to call a referendum on unification.
