Special counsel Jack Smith has put forth a proposal to commence the trial for former President Donald Trump’s criminal charges related to his efforts to overturn his loss to President Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election, suggesting a commencement date of January 2.

In a filing submitted to the federal court in Washington, D.C., Smith asserted that this chosen trial date would serve to honor the public’s fervent desire for a swift trial, particularly in a case of such magnitude.

Within the eight-page submission, Smith outlined that the prosecution’s presentation to jurors is estimated to last no more than four to six weeks, effectively streamlining the proceedings, CNBC reported.
