What happens when we don't express our feelings?

If we are not allowed to express our feelings as children because we are afraid of being punished, we will begin to start shoving our feelings down.

Feelings become an unsafe place because of the fear of punishment. The feelings that we shove down begin to come out in distorted ways and extreme emotions. This is because we are under pressure and have no healthy way of expressing our feelings. This happens when we don't learn how to manage or regulate as children.

Unfortunately, the cycle continues and we are also afraid of other people's feelings, so we now begin to stop others from having their feelings.

The only way to prevent this is to learn how to get in touch with our feelings and to begin to heal ourselves so we do not continue the cycle.

So, we must do whatever we have to do to allow ourselves to express our feelings so we can start to become comfortable with them.

Equally as important, we become comfortable with letting other people have their feelings.
