Workers throughout the country staged demonstrations to mark the first week of the new military regime. A large procession began at the Hall of Trade Unions and continued through the main streets of Accra. The protesters carried placards celebrating the end of Nkrumah's rule. The placards as well as the chanting denounced the former president, socialism and countries such as communist China and the Soviet Union.

The following day, Friday, March 4th,. Lt. Gen. Ankrah, Ghana's first army commander who was dismissed the previous year on suspicion that he was planning a coup, denounced Guinea, the country which had granted Nkrumah refuge as well as Dr. Nkrumah himself.

Ankrah had been selected by the coup leaders to become Head of State and leader of the National Liberation Council. He accused Guinea, which was led by Nkrumah's political ally Sekou Toure, of "harbouring one of the most notorious tyrants and criminals in Africa, Kwame Nkrumah, who now styles himself Chief of State of Guines and leader of the Guinea Democratic Party." Ankrah also announced the immediate closure of Ghana's embassy in Conakry and called upon the Guinean government to allow the ambassador and staff to leave the country.
