Presidential power has been studied in America since the very first citizen raised his right hand and swore to execute the laws of the Constitution faithfully and support and defend it. General Washington set the standards that all would follow, for a while. The current occupant of the office is wielding power as if he (or those that control him) are not bound by the Constitution or longstanding policy that has served the Republic well, until now. Starting in 2008, Presidents began using direct power more and more as they faced divided congresses off and on that constricted their ability to get legislation passed and turned to executive orders quite often or novel uses of existing law. The unelected executive branch leaders have followed suit and now the entire Federal government is wielding power nearly completely unrestrained by the Constitution. The United States faces the greatest crisis it has seen since the decade leading up to 1861 and yet the states seem mostly incapable of confronting it even though they have the power to do so. With the leading opposition candidate for president in 2024, and the last one to hold the office before Biden, under multiple federal indictments, we are perceived by the world as a failing nation.
