“Time to Legalize ALL Drugs” - Joe Rogan & Patrick Bet David discuss
It's ironic that many of the pro-freedom, "government stay out of my life" folks refuse to apply this philosophy to drugs. We have more drugs and addicts than ever because of the War on Drugs. It has created a closed market where organized crime flourishes. We only have Meth because Speed is illegal. We only have Crack because Cocaine is illegal. We only have Fentanyl because Opium is illegal. Drug laws have only made things worse.
In every instance of a substance being banned, a stronger, more dangerous, more addictive substances has replaced it. A game of whack-a-mole humanity can never win.
How many times have you heard this? "We can't legalize drugs, because my friend/relative was addicted to ***** and it ruined their life, they stole to buy it, destroyed their health, wound up in jail (or died)!" What these surface-skimmer thinkers fail to comprehend is that drug was already illegal, and they still got their hands on it, easily. That's testimony to the War on Drugs being a failure.
Cops no longer get your cat out of the tree, or stop to help you when you are broken down on the road. Instead they are on a constant lookout for drugs or signs of drug use to make busts and give hard time for victimless crimes. This has turned community police into militarized jackbooted thugs and your constitutional rights made trivial. All in the name of a losing battle on chemicals.
No child should lose their parent for years because they chose what substance they felt like using, or sold something to someone who willingly wanted to buy it. People jailed for drugs get out of jail with a record and go back to using and/or selling drugs because they cannot find a job. A revolving door.
As penalties have increased for drugs, we have seen more and more violent and statistic people get involved in the trade because they have nothing to lose. This has turned neighborhoods into war zones and the most dangerous cartels take over entire countries. A powder that cost $20 - $50 to make, sells for thousands with no quality control standards a regulated product would require. Drugs laced or cut with even more dangerous substances would be non-existent in a regulated market. "Cocaine is a hellaova drug, but it's not the coke that kills you, it's the cut" - Rick James.
Drug addiction should be treated as a medical problem, not a criminal issue. If you smoke cigarettes (the most addictive substance on earth that kills and injures more people than all other drugs combined) and/or drink alcohol (one of the most health damaging and family destroying substances we know of) and think you should be left alone, while people use use less dangerous yet more illegal substances should be jailed and have everything taken from them, you are a hypocrite. If you think there should be no social stigma for seeking out ways to stop smoking, or drinking, but drug addicts should be treated as the scum of the earth for trying to end their addictions while being open and honest about it, you are a hypocrite.
Free people should be free to put whatever they want into their bodies, unless you think we belong to the State. A tiny, tiny fraction of the money spent on the War on Drugs would be better suited in addiction recovery and research. Less jails, less violence on the street and property crime surrounding drug turf and getting money to buy drugs, cops that actually fight crimes that endanger us, more drug education and rehabilitation: results in a sane country, with sane policies, and less drug use over time.
