This year will mark the 30th anniversary of the first-ever UFC live event. To say that it was a crazy event would be an understatement. The UFC had to place ads to get fighters to take part and even then only a few turned up. The planned 16-man tournament had to be downsized to an 8-man tournament. The fights took place in the now-iconic octagon. There were no weight classes and fights could go on for an unlimited number of 5-minute rounds until one fighter was knocked out, submitted, or their corner threw in the towel. The only illegal moves were biting, eye-gouging, and groin strikes and even these only invited a $1500 fine. There were no disqualifications. A few crazier ideas didn't make the cut such as covering the top of the cage with barbed wire. Royce Gracie won the tournament that was still very rough around the edges but it proved monumental in getting the stone rolling that has resulted in MMA becoming a legitimate sport now that attracts interest worldwide
