I toasted my oak chips for 1.5 hours at 220f (104c), 280f (138c), and 400f (204c).
This brought out the oaky, sweet, and vanilla properties. When using different woods (especially softer woods) you are more than likely going to have to experiment with times and temperatures till you find a flavor that you like. Softer woods do not need as much heat to bring out those additional flavors.
