Commander shows a paternal kind of care for his subordinates serving in the Guard of Honor on a hot day, at Mamayev Kurgan "Motherland Calls" Monument, Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad.)

The Monument stands for 1 million+ Soviet dead in the Battle for Stalingrad (1943), which proved a decisive battle in WWII as the Germans only retreated following this.

Story has it that even grass stopped growing at Mamayev Kurgan, due to the sheer amount of shells littering the ground. Soviet forces held the area for 140 days, to prevent the Germans from moving to further key positions.

It's also around about when isolationist USA decided to enter the conflict in Europe, understanding the USSR had already won.
