Xploring The Maliseet Trail | Hays Falls
Xploring the local waterfalls while my buddy Jason is down from Ontario.
We've had a very wet June with over 20 days of rain...the trail was soggy but worth the hike in.
The Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) Trail forms part of the Sentier NB Trail network and holds significant historical importance as an ancient portage and canoe transportation route that connected the Saint John River system with the St. Croix River. This route has been utilized by the Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) First Nations people for countless generations. Dating back to the 1600s, the trail facilitated travel through a series of lakes, rivers, and streams, encompassing over 200 km (125 mi.) of paddling and 20 km (12 mi.) of portaging.
Today, the Maliseet hiking trail represents only a fraction of its former extent and is primarily used to access Hays Falls, which lies a mere 2 km (1.2 mi.) from the main road. The trail begins by ascending through a predominantly softwood forest, gradually transitioning into a hardwood ridge. After approximately one kilometer (mile), the trail splits to the right. Continuing straight leads to the Trans-Canada Highway 2. Upon reaching the highway, the trail continues beneath it via large culverts before proceeding for a short distance and gradually becoming more difficult to follow until it no longer exists as a defined trail.
During winter, the trail to Highway 2 serves as a convenient route for ice climbers seeking quick access to the falls.
