Foreign nationals are being evacuated from Niger as the fallout from the recent military coup continues. Long lines of vehicles have formed outside the main airport in Niamey, with foreign nationals, especially the French, seeking to flee the violence which they now increasingly face as anti-French sentiment in the country grows.

The French ministry released a statement indicating that the evacuation process began on Tuesday for both French and other European nationals desiring to depart Niger, citing security concerns.

Fears over a conflict loom since the ousting of former President Mohamed Bazoum continues to divide international sentiment. The military coup appears to have widespread support in Niger, and neighbors Mali and Burkina Faso have also expressed support for the new military junta. However, ECOWAS nations and France have blocked all financial aid and have threatened a military invasion unless the deposed government is restored. That ultimatum expired on Monday.
