The Forbidden City in Beijing did not flood for 600 years during Ming and Qing Dynasties. However, the royal palace got flooded during a heavy rain recently.

600 years ago, Chinese architects built a robust drainage system for the palace based on the river basins of nearby regions. The ground of the Forbidden City on the north side is two meters higher than the ground on the south side. Overflow of water flows to the moat of the palace and then to Zhongnan Hai, a lake near the palace.
