Perseverance is the latest rover to head to the Red Planet to search for signs of life. This is the history of those that came before it.

1. Sojourner (1997): Sojourner was the first successful Mars rover mission. It was a part of NASA's Mars Pathfinder mission and was designed to study the Martian surface. Sojourner operated for about three months and provided valuable data on the geology and composition of Mars.

2. Spirit and Opportunity (2004): Spirit and Opportunity were twin rovers launched by NASA as part of the Mars Exploration Rover mission. Spirit landed in Gusev Crater, while Opportunity landed in Meridiani Planum. These rovers were designed to search for signs of past water activity on Mars. Spirit operated until 2010, while Opportunity continued functioning until 2018, making it the longest-operating rover on Mars.

3. Curiosity (2012): Curiosity, also known as the Mars Science Laboratory, is a car-sized rover that was sent by NASA to explore Gale Crater. It is equipped with advanced instruments to assess the habitability potential of Mars and search for evidence of past or present microbial life. Curiosity is still operational and has made significant discoveries, including the presence of organic compounds on Mars.

4. Perseverance (2020): Perseverance is the latest rover sent to Mars by NASA. It was launched in July 2020 and successfully landed in Jezero Crater on February 18, 2021. Perseverance is equipped with an array of scientific instruments, including a drill to collect samples of Martian rocks and soil for future return to Earth. Its primary mission is to search for signs of ancient microbial life and study the planet's geology and climate.

The Mars rovers have played a crucial role in advancing our understanding of the Red Planet. They have provided valuable data on Martian geology, climate, and potential habitability, and have paved the way for future human exploration of Mars.
