Metabolic Link podcast w/ DOM D’AGNOSTINO

Couple of decades ago, metabolic ward,
twin [monozygotic] studies on weight loss...
-exercise effects
-cycle 600kcal/day
-fed calories that would have kept their
weight stable if not cycling
-7 sets of twins
-1 of each pair did the cycling
Results: wildly differing weight changes

If you say that 3500 kcal = 1 pound fat loss...
-expected: over several weeks of the study
=several kg weight loss in cyclists
1 pair: BOTH lost this much weight
1 pair: BOTH lost no weight
Within twin concordance was much
higher than across twin pairs
Example: if you lost 1 kg, so did your twin
ABILITY OF EXERCISE TO CONTRIBUTE
TO WEIGHT LOSS IS DEPENDENT ON GENETICS!!

Dom:
"Exercise caused metabolic adaptations
that enhanced metabolic efficiency"
-which preserved energy through
reduced T3
Jeff
-was not a popular result in training circles
"What accounted for MOST OF FAT LOSS
was resting energy expenditure"
-it DECREASED FOR EXERCISING TWIN
-would think the opposite, but
'In context of exercising, resting energy use goes DOWN'
