Hedy Lamarr, born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler (November 9, 1914 – January 19, 2000), was an Austrian-born American actress and inventor. She was widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and glamorous actresses of her time, known for her elegance and talent on the silver screen. Lamarr's career spanned from the late 1930s to the 1950s, during which she appeared in numerous films, gaining recognition for her performances in movies such as "Algiers" (1938), "Boom Town" (1940), and "Samson and Delilah" (1949).
Apart from her successful acting career, Hedy Lamarr was also an accomplished inventor. During World War II, she co-invented a frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology with George Antheil, a composer and musician. Their invention, initially designed to secure radio-controlled torpedoes, served as a foundation for modern wireless communication technologies. Although their technology was not implemented during the war, it formed the basis for various applications in later years, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS.
Despite her significant contributions to the field of technology, Lamarr's invention did not gain recognition until much later in her life. In 1997, she and George Antheil were honored with the Electronic Frontier Foundation Pioneer Award for their groundbreaking work in spread spectrum technology.
Hedy Lamarr's life and achievements are a testament to her remarkable talent and intellect, showcasing her multifaceted abilities beyond her glamorous on-screen persona. She left a lasting impact on both the entertainment industry and the world of technology.
