Why does the flag have 13 stripes?

The 13 stripes on the flag represent the 13 original colonies that became part of the United States of America in 1776. These were the British colonies that rebelled against the king and declared their independence. They were: **New Hampshire**, **Massachusetts**, **Rhode Island**, **Connecticut**, **New York**, **New Jersey**, **Pennsylvania**, **Delaware**, **Maryland**, **Virginia**, **North Carolina**, **South Carolina**, and **Georgia**¹². Each stripe on the flag stands for one of these colonies.

The first official national flag was approved by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. That's why we celebrate Flag Day on June 14 every year. The flag resolution stated that the flag would have 13 alternating red and white stripes and 13 white stars in a blue field representing a new constellation²³. The Congress did not specify how the stars should be arranged, so there were different versions of the flag with different patterns of stars.

As new states joined the union, new stars and stripes were added to the flag. In 1794, Kentucky and Vermont became states, and two more stripes and stars were added, making the flag have 15 stripes and 15 stars²³. This was the flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write the poem that became our national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner, after he saw it flying over Fort McHenry during the War of 1812²⁴.

However, adding more stripes to the flag made it look too crowded and complicated. So in 1818, Congress decided to go back to 13 stripes to honor the original colonies, and to add only one star for each new state²³. This way, the flag would always have 50 stars, one for each state in the union. The last star was added in 1960, when Hawaii became a state²⁵.

So now you know why the flag has 13 stripes and what they mean. They are a reminder of our history and our values as a nation. They are a symbol of our unity and our diversity. They are a source of pride and inspiration for all Americans.
