So their tactic is to send a big group of armed vehicles towards Russian positions randomly. They could have done it earlier, there was no need to wait for western support.

-> They could have retreated from Bakhmut and send that contingent towards Melitopol. But they made a stand, lost ten thousands of troops and also the city.
