David Charges His Son - I Chron. 28

As I look out over the American landscape, I see plenty to be distressed over. Among the many things that bother me is the fact that there seem to be so few real men anymore. American men have been emasculated. Men have been weakened by a culture that expects them to act more like women then men. The qualities that used to define men – toughness, strength, a willingness to work, etc. – seem to be in short supply. And unfortunately, real men are even hard to find in the church.

In today's text, we will see David charge his young son to go serve God and build a temple. Success will require Solomon to step up and be a man. It will require him too be courageous, persevere, work hard, and do the right thing. These are all qualities a real man possesses. I dare say that if David were a modern king and gave this same charge to a teenage son, he would probably be accused of toxic masculinity. That's too bad. Both the church and American society need more real men.

The lesson for all of us here, whether male or female, is to be serious about serving God with their whole hearts and minds. If you get nothing else out of this Bible study, remember this key phrase: 'go do it'. It's the money phrase and one that underscores this entire chapter.
