U-Haul Load Share Program | Getting paid to haul THEIR trailer!

I recently drove cross country to deliver the Price is Right Wheel to its new home in Pennsylvania. The easiest and most economical way was to rent a U-Haul truck.

This is where its gets interesting. U-Haul reached out to me and made an offer. If I tow one of their U-Box trailers to a destination in Indiana they will pay me $650. I said yes! This would pay for nearly all of my gas on this trip and only be a few miles out of my way. The offer was upped to $850 if I agreed to deviate and drop the box off in southern Michigan. No problem! This was eventually canceled and I was rerouted back to Indiana for the original $650.

The pick up was a nightmare. The box and trailer were not at the designated location. The customer service is helping me figure this out was terrible, and then after nearly an hour, the box was located at another location across town. I drove over to the new location and after they were able to locate the box, it took another hour to track down someone who could drive a forklift and load the trailer, etc. Then is was discovered the it was loaded incorrectly, and possibly would have to be reloaded, fortunately the crisis was averted and the box was labeled and I was sent on my way! Most of the employees I dealt with in these two locations were unfamiliar with the program and the processes adding to the confusion and delays. The manager of one location even admitted to me that this was his first load-share process and he didn't know what he was doing. All told nearly three additional hours, pushing me closer to down town, and right in the middle of the evening rush hour.

After four days on the road, taking a scenic rout through the upper mid-west, I arrive in Indiana to drop the box off, the employee who greeted me knew exactly what to do, check the box in, detached it from my truck, and I was on the road in a couple of minutes! He had obviously received training and was experienced with the program.

For my troubles, the $650 was upped to $750 and it was paid as a credit against my U-haul truck rental. Win for me! Would I do load share again? Of course! if they had a program where I could tow there trailer with my truck if I was driving cross country, I would jump on that as well!
