Star Wars The Acolyte Cost $250M ?! | Disney Lucasfilm & Marvel Studios Cost Disney Plus Too Much | Disney CEO Bob Iger needs to reign this in | Disney Spends $49 Million On Star Wars Spinoff ‘The Acolyte’ | Another Kathleen Kennedy Star Wars show no one asked for?

A recent filing by Disney / Lucasfilm / Blue Stockings LTD in the UK shows the latest Star Wars Disney Plus show THE ACOLYTE (currently in post production) spent about $50 Million USD in the pre-production phase alone through September 24th, 2022. This would have included writing, art and set design along with construction, props and costumes, and opening a lease with the brand new multi-billion dollar soundstage facility in Britain, Shinfield Studios.

If we extrapolate the final costs from those of pre-production when compared to similar projects in the past, The Acolyte final cost will likely be in the $250M range.

Disney, like many studios often elect to conduct physical production in the UK to take advantage of lucrative tax incentives like the UK Film Tax Credit program, which offers up to 25% back on qualified production expenses made in the country.

The problem ultimately is that Disney Plus has struggled GREATLY to financially perform thanks to enormous costs of production for what Bob Iger refers to as "Core Content" like Star Wars and Marvel products. Iger recently made cuts to production and content but those cuts are for projects going FORWARD, not those already greenlit (contracted) AND well underway.

The Acolyte (Star Wars / Lucasfilm) was greenlit back in March 2021 and finally went into physical production in the second half of 2022, with principal photography starting in October/November 2022 and reportedly concluding on schedule in late May 2023 just before the WGA and SAG AFTRA strikes began.
