read by Andy Minter The Wrong Box is a black comedy novel co-written by Robert Louis Stevenson and Lloyd Osbourne, first published in 1889. The story revolves around two brothers, Joseph and Masterman Finsbury, who are the last two surviving members of a tontine—a financial arrangement in which a group of people invests money, and the last surviving member receives the entire sum.

Joseph, the active brother, is the guardian of his nephews, Morris and John, and of a friend's daughter, Julia Hazeltine. Unfortunately, Joseph's investment in the leather business failed, leaving him in debt to his wards. Morris, determined to regain his money through the tontine, approaches Michael, Masterman's son and a solicitor, to propose a deal to share the tontine payment regardless of which brother dies first. Michael refuses, leading Morris to suspect that Michael is hiding Masterman's death.

A train crash complicates matters further. Joseph survives the crash and manages to travel to London. Meanwhile, Morris and John, fearing the loss of the tontine if Joseph's death is discovered, hide the body of an elderly man, thinking it is Joseph's body. They send the body in a barrel to London, intending to collect it later
