A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett is a heartwarming children's novel that tells the story of Sara Crewe, a young and imaginative girl. The book was first published as a novel in 1905 but was originally an expanded version of the short story "Sara Crewe: or, What Happened at Miss Minchin's," which had been serialized in St. Nicholas Magazine in December 1887 and later published as a book in 1888.

The story begins with Sara Crewe and her father, Captain Ralph Crewe, on their way to London in a cab. Sara is a seven-year-old girl who possesses an old-fashioned thoughtfulness and curiosity beyond her years. She has been raised in India by her father, a wealthy widower stationed there with the British Army. Because the Indian climate is considered unsuitable for children, Sara is sent to an all-girls boarding school in London run by the haughty Miss Minchin.

At the boarding school, Sara lives a pampered life due to her father's wealth. She is treated as a "princess" by the other students and enjoys special privileges, including her own room, a personal maid, and even her own carriage and pony. Sara is intelligent, imaginative, and kind, and she befriends Ermengarde, Lottie, and Becky. However, her life takes a drastic turn when news arrives that her father has passed away due to jungle fever, and she is left orphaned and penniless.
