Deforestation in the Amazon rainforest dropped to new record-lows in July, according to data published Thursday by Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research. Brazilian officials report deforestation decreased by 66% compared to July 2022 and declined to its lowest rate in six years. Brazilian environment minister Marina Silva attributed the drop in deforestation to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s push to preserve the rainforest.
