Women ENRAGED Over BAN On PERMANENT ALIMONY!

Women are ENRAGED over the end of permanent alimony in Florida! As a 20-year divorce attorney, I will explain what's going on. Call into the show to talk to me and tell me your opinions on this! Context: It took four tries and nearly 10 years, but Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed a bill to overhaul the state's alimony laws and eliminate permanent alimony. DeSantis’ approval came a year after he vetoed a similar bill, and after former Gov. Rick Scott vetoed similar bills twice. Critics argued the bill will impoverish older ex-spouses who have been homemakers and rely upon alimony payments to live. Proponents of the bill say it adds clarity and stops ex-spouses from having to continue working long past retirement because they had to keep making alimony payments. What is permanent alimony? When a marriage is ended, the court may order one ex-spouse to make financial payments called alimony to the other ex-spouse. Originally it was solely to support children, and when men were the primary providers it was to help ex-wives support themselves after a divorce. When no-fault divorce became popular, alimony remained a right but became more conditional. Florida statutes previously recognized four types of alimony a court may grant: Bridge-the-gap alimony: Payments made to help the supported ex-spouse make the transition to being single and financially independent. Bridge-the-gap alimony is designed to assist a party with legitimate identifiable short-term needs, and it may not exceed 2 years. Rehabilitative alimony: Payments as part of a specified plan made to help the ex-spouse learn or regain skills or credentials, or acquire work experience needed to get employed. Durational alimony: Payments made for a set period of time after a "marriage of short or moderate duration" or after a long marriage, as determined by the court, if permanent alimony is not needed. Permanent alimony: Payments made for the duration of an ex-spouse's life, generally following a long marriage or a short or moderate one if there are exceptional circumstances.Show more
