JERVIS BAY, AUSTRALIA — The “gloomy” octopus is widely thought to be an antisocial creature, but new research may change this thinking. A study published in the journal Marine and Freshwater Behaviour and Physiology details the discovery of a site in close to Jervis Bay, Australia’s occupied by 15 of the creatures. Scientists observed complex social behavior in the creatures, including, mating, mate defense, as well as eviction from the site and exclusion of octopuses from the group. The study provides scientists with a deeper understanding of one of nature’s most difficult to study creatures.
