• Neh. 13:23-25 Ashdod, or Azotus, as it is called in Act_8:40, was one of the five cities of the Philistines; which, though none of the seven nations with whom marriage was forbidden, yet it was very unfit and improper to marry them. There were children in the same family by Jewish and Philistine mothers. As the Jewish mother would always speak to her children in Hebrew or Chaldee, so they learnt to speak these languages; and as the Ashdod mother would always speak to her children in the Ashdod language, so they learnt that tongue. Thus there were, in the same family, children who could not understand each other; half, or one part, speaking one language, and the other part another. Nehemiah contended with Jews who had married foreign wives, pronounced a curse upon them, plucked their hair and prayed for them. Multiple actions proved his love for God.

• Neh. 13:26-27 Nehemiah challenged the Jews about their life styles and reminded them of the awful example of Solomon and what a heavy curse Solomon’s conduct brought upon himself and upon the people. By marrying strange wives, by whom he was drawn into idolatry. Although Solomon loved the Lord, his heart, through his wives, was turned after other gods. If such a great and wise man was enticed by the women into idolatry, much more may you, and therefore it was very dangerous to marry them.

• Neh. 13:28-31 Nehemiah found out that one of the priests, Manasseh, brother of Jaddua, son of Joiada, and grandson of Eliashib the high priest was married to the Daughter of Sanballat, an arch enemy of the Jews. Without wasting much time, Nehemiah Struck him off the list of the priests, and deemed him utterly unworthy of all connection and relationship with the rest of the people of God. This was surely illegal, and they had to be separated from their foreign wives and sanctified to God again before being given their regular work. Nehemiah’s testimony was that he had done everything he knew how to bring about righteousness in the priesthood and among the Levites, including their offerings and service. Nehemiah’s last recorded words (Neh_5:19), remember me, O my God, for good, would serve well as the last words of any person of faith.

Father in the name of Jesus, remember me for my labour of love in the kingdom and towards your people. Heb 6:10
10 For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
