Today we visit the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs South Dakota. It is a preserved sink hole that houses a collection of Mammoth bones that they are still unearthing. The site was discovered in 1974 during the excavation for a housing development. The developer noticed some large bones and contacted scientists, leading to the recognition of the site's significance. The Mammoth Site was formed approximately 26,000 years ago when a natural sinkhole filled with water, creating a trap for animals. Mammoths and other Ice Age fauna would venture onto the thin layer of soil that covered the sinkhole, eventually falling through and being unable to escape. Over 60 mammoth remains have been uncovered at the Mammoth Site, making it one of the most extensive collections of mammoth fossils in the world.
