We concentrate on non-Big 4 accounting firms, a significant but sometimes disregarded segment of the global audit market. We specifically investigate whether these firms can offer greater audit quality as a result of their participation in an international accounting organization or network (AAN). Data from 24 countries and a difference-in-differences research design allow us to conclude that joining an AAN increases the audit quality of small international accounting firms.
