Statistically speaking, air travel is the safest mode of transportation, but a little turbulence can make even the most seasoned of journeymen slide to the edge of their seats. Last year was the safest in air travel history.

Statistics don’t lie – landing is the hardest and most dangerous phase of the flight. It can be so challenging, that the pilot might approach the tarmac and evade it at the last moment, a maneuver called “go-around”. The pilot of this Boeing 737 by the company KLM had a moment just like it in this here footage.

The plane can be seen encountering what is known as wind shear, a difference in wind speed and/or direction over a relatively short distance in the atmosphere. The wind shear made it extremely difficult for the pilot to land the steel bird on the runway, but this man showed his skills and saved the plane from a disastrous contact with the ground!

Air currents are not smooth, so turbulence is common both in the air and close to the ground. No matter where you are, if you feel the turbulence hit the body of the plane, your thoughts instantly go towards a violent death by fire. Imagination can be a terrible companion on these trips, so just remember that you have a better chance to total your car on the highway!
