On Tuesday, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris declined an invitation from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to discuss the state’s new Black history curriculum, stating that she will not engage in a debate with him on the topic of slavery.

Governor DeSantis, who is vying for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, had invited Harris to Florida after she criticized the state’s curriculum for promoting what she referred to as “revisionist history” about slavery in the United States. The Florida board of education had recently approved new guidelines, including one for middle school students, which mentioned that slaves developed skills that could be used for personal benefit.

While delivering a previously-scheduled speech at an event in Orlando, Harris firmly stated, “There is no roundtable, no lecture, no invitation that we will accept to debate an undeniable fact: There were no redeeming qualities of slavery.”

During her recent tour of several U.S. states, Harris has been actively speaking out against DeSantis and his policies. She urged Iowa healthcare workers to oppose restrictive abortion laws, rallied Latinos in Chicago against “extremist” Republicans, and has been on the offensive in her remarks, Reuters reported.
