OSCAR LEVANT, Piano, with the PHILHARMONIC- SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA OF NEW YORK, DIMITRI MITROPOULOS, Conductor
Composed in 1936, the concerto quickly became popular with audiences both in his homeland and abroad. It is Khatchaturian's second concerto, but the first major work in which he incorporated the raucous rhythms and vivid flavors of traditional Armenian dance.
The concerto is made up of three movements, each uniquely crafted by Khatchaturian to showcase the pianist's skill while also maintaining the orchestra's importance as an accompaniment. The first movement starts with a quiet, slow section, which quickly leads to an exhilarating, fast-paced melody. The second movement is more subtle, with delicate piano solos and orchestral accompaniments, while the third is full of dynamic energy, featuring a dance-like rhythm reminiscent of Armenian folk music.
One of the unique aspects of the concerto is the way Khatchaturian draws on Armenian rhythms and melodies to create a truly distinct piece of music. The use of these motifs broadened the horizons of classical music, exposing audiences around the world to the unique sounds and rhythms of Armenia. The use of intense dances such as the khorumi and shalakho and the Armenian folk music, given an orchestral sophistication, have made this concerto an essential part of the piano literature.
The concerto has been a major work for pianists, with its challenging technical and emotional demands. Like many concertos, it also requires a substantial orchestra to perform, and it includes a diverse range of musical instruments. This complexity of instrumentation makes the concerto an ideal showcase for demonstrating the expressive and technical range of a talented pianist.
Aram Khatchaturian's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra has become a staple in the world of classical music. It remains a popular and exciting piece to perform for pianists and music lovers. This work effectively showcases Khatchaturian's development of his unique musical style, which combined traditional Armenian music with the conventions of classical music. Its melodic variety, sophisticated harmonies, and imaginative rhythms make the concerto both a technical and artistic masterpiece. Khatchaturian's use of Armenian music led the way for other composers to integrate ethnic flavor into their works, and his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra remains an essential part of the international repertoire.
