Young hen brings back babies. Nested in long grass in the middle of winter! Not safe.

We couldn’t find this hen’s nest and I thought she had died because she stopped coming into the yard for food and water. It was a lovely surprise to see they survived the cold and the foxes.
Free range birds need to be trained to lay their eggs in the safety of the yard and coops. Sometimes they go AWOL and lay in the bush or the long grass but are usually killed by foxes or goannas if it’s summer.
