• Neh. 13:14 Nehemiah turns to God because only He can perfectly value and reward what he has done for His house. He does not ask for reward. He knows himself to be a slave who has only done what he ought to do (Luk_17:10). But he also knows that God is not unjust to forget what has been done for Him (Heb_6:10). In the same way, we too may recommend our works to the Lord and ask Him to confirm the works of our hands (Psa_90:17). If we cannot go to Him in sincerity with all that we have done, we have not been working for Him. We have to confess that and then we can go back to Him and work with Him and for Him.

• Neh. 13:15 The desecration of the Sabbath was first brought into prominence among the sins of the Jewish people by Jeremiah Jer_17:21-27. It gained ground during the captivity, when foreign masters would not allow the cessation of labor for one day in seven in honour of the God that they did not know. On the return from the captivity, the sabbatical rest appears to have been one of the institutions that was most difficult to re-establish. So, Nehemiah personally took up the challenge to confront and warn them with the aim of getting them back on track. Where is your zeal for the house of God? May it be renewed and re-fired in Jesus' name.

• Neh. 13:16-18 Friendly relations subsisted between the Phoenicians and the Jews, after the captivity Ezr_3:7. It was, however, a new fact, and one pregnant with evil consequences, that the Tyrians should have established a permanent colony at Jerusalem. Its influence on the other inhabitants weakened the hold of the Law upon men’s consciences, and caused it to be transgressed continually more and more openly like seen here. Nehemiah reminded them of how this same attitude brought evil on their fathers and same is now plaguing them. A review of history, helps us to avoid a repetition of the same mistakes in the future, please learn from your past mistakes in order to take the right steps in the future.

Personal Supplication
Father in the name of Jesus, let the zeal of Your house take me over. Fill me with passion for the things that You are concerned about. Ps 69:9
9 Because zeal for Your house has eaten me up, And the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.
