A volcanic eruption appears imminent in Iceland approximately 25 kilometers southwest of the city of Reykjavik near Fagradalsfjall volcano seems inevitable. – This is what will happen and how the lava flow will react. It’s just a matter of time after 3000 earthquakes today

In terms of seismic activity, the magma is located on the Reykjanes peninsula at a depth of about two kilometres. In terms of the scenario from the previous two volcanic eruptions on the Reykjanes peninsula, the eruption could occur in less than five days.

This is what Benedikt Gunnar Ófeigsson, a tectonics expert at the Icelandic Met Office, says about the earthquake and possible volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula.

Lava spewed out near Mount Fagradalsfjall, 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the capital Reykjavik, in both 2021 and 2022

Iceland is Europe's biggest and most active volcanic region.

The North Atlantic island straddles the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a crack on the ocean floor separating the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates.
