The Tragic Story of Chris Benoit

On the 24th of June 2007, the Toyota Centre in Houston, Texas, welcomed the WWE for their annual pay-per-view event Vengeance: Night of Champions. As the name of the event suggests, every championship across the organisations three brands were on the line that night.

Once of those titles, was the ECW world heavyweight championship. WWE superstar and fan favourite Chris Benoit was scheduled to wrestle CM Punk for the vacant belt, but he uncharacteristically failed to show up, being replaced by Jonny Nitro, who would go on to win the match and become champion.

The next night, the 25th of June 2007, the world of wrestling would be rocked when WWE Chairman Vince McMahon would open their flagship show Monday Night RAW, to announce the death of Chris Benoit.

That night, numerous WWE superstars would emotionally recall their fondest memories of the man dubbed The Crippler, or The Rabid Wolverine. But within the space of 26 hours, further details would emerge which would alter the context of the tragedy irreparably and tarnish the legacy that Chris had worked all his life to build.
