YHWH is the name of God in the Hebrew Bible, consisting of four consonants:
Yod, Heh, Waw, and Heh.It is known as the tetragrammaton and is the most common name of God in the Hebrew Bible.
After the Babylonian Exile, Jews ceased to use the name Yahweh for two reasons: as Judaism became a universal religion, the more common Hebrew noun Elohim tended to replace Yahweh to demonstrate the universal sovereignty of Israel’s God over all others.
YHWH is the third person singular imperfect of the verb "to be," meaning, therefore, "He is." It stems from the Hebrew conception of monotheism that God exists by himself, the uncreated Creator who doesn't depend on anything or anyone else; therefore, I am who I am. Scholars and rabbis have noted that the letters YHWH represent breathing sounds, or aspirated consonants, and when pronounced without intervening vowels, it actually sounds like breathing.
