Saddle Hunting Ep:5 | Ascenders Pt:1 | Freedom of Choice

Every hunter has different needs/wants than the next. The great thing about hunting is that there are many options to choose from when it comes to gear.

One essential part of a saddle hunting kit is an ascender. And just like everything else, there are many options, especially since there are a whole lot more climbers out there than just saddle hunters.

An ascender is a device that attaches to a rope and allows a climber to ascend the rope. The device is attached to the climber via harness or saddle. A fixed rope is fed through the device and as the climber ascends they will pull slack rope from above through the device to keep the climber from falling. These devices can be mechanical, or non-mechanical.

In this mini series I will discuss the 3 types of ascenders, and how to use each type. The series will include:

Part 1: "Freedom of Choice"
I will explain what an ascender does, tell you the 3 types of ascenders used by saddle hunters, and how to rig and use each type.

Part 2: "Friction Hitches"
I will demonstrate in detail and in real time how to tie, install, and ascend with the 3 most common rope type friction hitches used by saddle hunters.

Part 3: "One Way Ascenders"
I will demonstrate in detail and in real time how to install and ascend with one way ascenders such as the the Kong Duck and Ropeman 1.

Part 4: "Two Way Ascenders/Descenders"
I will demonstrate in detail and in real time how to install and ascend with two way ascend/descend devices such as the Madrock Safeguard. The Rappel demonstration will be in a separate video.
