The real beginning of the Russian naval traditions is the decision of the Boyar Duma on the construction of a regular fleet of October 30, 1696, adopted at the suggestion of Peter I.

The Navy of the Russian Federation is the successor to the military fleet of the Russian Empire and the Navy of the USSR and organizationally consists of five operational-strategic formations: the North, Pacific, Baltic and Black Sea fleets and the Caspian flotilla.
