Artificial Intelligence to Superintelligence
In this talk, Nick Bostrom, a Swedish philosopher and director of the Future of Humanity Institute at Oxford University, discusses the potential future of artificial intelligence (AI). Bostrom argues that AI could eventually surpass human intelligence, and that this could have profound implications for the future of humanity.
Bostrom begins by defining AI as "any device that can reason, learn, and act autonomously." He then discusses the different types of AI, including narrow AI, which is designed to perform a specific task, and general AI, which is designed to be as intelligent as a human being.
Bostrom argues that general AI is likely to be developed within the next few decades, and that this could have a significant impact on the future of humanity. For example, general AI could be used to solve some of the world's most pressing problems, such as climate change and poverty. However, Bostrom also warns that general AI could pose a serious threat to humanity, if it is not developed and used carefully.
One of the main concerns about general AI is that it could become so intelligent that it surpasses human control. This is known as the "superintelligence" scenario, and it is one of the most serious existential risks facing humanity. Bostrom argues that we need to start thinking about how to prevent this scenario from happening, and that we need to develop international agreements on the development and use of AI.
The talk concludes with a discussion of the potential benefits and risks of AI. Bostrom argues that AI has the potential to be a great force for good in the world, but that it also poses serious risks. He urges us to start thinking about these risks now, so that we can ensure that AI is used for good.
This talk is a valuable resource for anyone who is interested in the future of AI. It provides a comprehensive overview of the potential benefits and risks of AI, and it offers some important insights into how we can ensure that AI is used for good
