SACRAMENTO POLICE INVESTIGATE FATAL COLLISION: FOUR PEDESTRIANS INVOLVED, ONE DECEASED, THREE SERIOUSLY INJURED
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A tragic incident unfolded on July 9, 2023, around 6:35 p.m., as the Sacramento Police Department responded to reports of a vehicle collision involving pedestrians near the intersection of Jibboom Street and Richards Boulevard. According to the latest update from the police, the vehicle involved had lost control before striking the pedestrians.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered four victims - two adult females and two juveniles aged 6 and 9 - all with serious or critical injuries. Immediate life-saving measures were initiated by the officers and personnel from the Sacramento Fire Department. Despite their efforts, a 38-year-old female adult was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
The second adult victim and the two juvenile victims were swiftly transported to local hospitals by Sacramento Fire personnel. The driver of the vehicle was found at the scene and, during the course of the investigation, officers observed objective signs of intoxication. As a result, the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Israel Campos, was arrested for felony DUI and Gross Vehicular Manslaughter.
Given the fatality, detectives from the Sacramento Police Department's Major Collision Investigations Unit have assumed control of the investigation. Collaborating with crime scene investigators, they meticulously combed the area for evidence, witnesses, and any additional information that could shed light on the incident.
While the collision remains under investigation, initial findings indicate that speed and impairment may have been contributing factors. The Sacramento County Coroner's Office will release the identity of the deceased victim once next of kin have been notified.
Detectives are urging anyone with information related to this tragic incident to come forward and contact the Sacramento Police Department. Witnesses can reach out to the dispatch center at (916) 808-5471 or provide anonymous tips through Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at (916) 443-HELP (4357). Tipsters may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 and can also submit information anonymously using the "P3 Tips" smartphone app.
The Sacramento community mourns the loss of life in this devastating collision and emphasizes the importance of responsible and sober driving to prevent such tragedies.
