Locals rejoice as snow falls on Johannesburg for first time in 11 years on July 12, 2023

Residents of Johannesburg woke up to a rare winter wonderland on Wednesday July 12,2023 as temperatures plummeted to -1 degrees Celsius, bringing snow to the city for the first time in 11 years.

Footage shows locals throwing snowballs, taking pictures and enjoying the extraordinary weather in coats and scarves.

“I am so, so excited about the weather today, it's beautiful. I think the last time we had this kind of weather was in 2012. And that was my first time experience in Johannesburg and now it is happening for the second time. I am loving it!" said a local student.

"It is incredible, this something so natural can bring about so much joy and happiness," added a second.

The last time Johannesburg experienced snow was in the August of 2012, more than a decade ago,

The South African Meteorological Service predicts that extreme cold weather conditions could persist for the rest of the week.
