A burglary suspect was shot after authorities said he attacked a Coconino County Sheriff's Office sergeant early Thursday morning.

CCSO said around 3:10 a.m., CCSO deputies responded to a burglary call on Hidden Hills Road in Doney Park.

Authorities said the caller told deputies someone had broken into his home and he had the suspect at gunpoint.

CCSO said the suspect jumped out the window he had just broken into and fled the area. When deputies arrived, they found the suspect just west of the victim's home.

Deputies said Sergeant Jess Payne, an 11-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office, gave verbal commands to the suspect, who initially complied with the commands.

CCSO said when Payne attempted to take the suspect into custody, the suspect attacked the sergeant and was able to get him in a chokehold. The suspect also grabbed Payne’s gun during the altercation, authorities said.

Deputies said, fearing for his life, Payne fired at the suspect, who was attacking him, grabbing his gun and on Payne’s back. The suspect was hit once and was taken into custody shortly thereafter, authorities said.

The suspect, later identified as 32-year-old Eric Adamson of Peoria, Ariz., was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center to be treated for his injuries, according to CCSO. Payne was evaluated by medics on scene and cleared with minor injuries.

CCSO said once Adamson is released from the hospital, he will be booked into the Coconino County Detention Facility on several felony charges.
