Rishi Sunak is underwriting a loan for high speed electric rail in Turkey, but can't fnd the money to invest here.
Right, so ticket office closures. We need them to shut to cut costs say the privatised train companies. We need staff in place to keep people safe and help those who need it, say the unions, one of he most vocal on this is TSSA general secretary candidate Bonnie Craven, but whilst we apparently can’t afford to maintain our own ticket offices, we’ve binned off the Northern Powerhouse rail project, we can’t afford to invest in our own railways, unless it’s the overblown, overpriced vanity project known as HS2 – although even that’s been scaled back of course - but we can apparently afford to build more railways, just not here. For some reason we’re building them in Turkey, which will really speed up travel times from London to the South West and back or wherever else the rail service is failing you. Yes, you heard me right, we in the UK, our government, are investing in railways in Turkey, but not just any railway, we’re investing in Turkey getting high speed electric rail no less! We’ve managed to find £680m to underwrite a loan to Turkey to help them finish off the Mersin-Adana-Gaziantep High Speed Railway on behalf of the Turkish Ministry of Transport. Apparently all of this is in keeping with Rishi Sunak’s pledge of growing our economy, by investing in infrastructure to help someone else’s economy! The government speak for why this benefits us consists of new export contract opportunities, please buy our stuff, we helped build you a train track kinda thinking and benefits to engineering and infrastructure management sectors based here. You know what would also benefit them? Building high speed electric rail here, instead of over there. Manchester Metro Mayor Andy Burham has weighed in on this story in a tweet saying, ‘so we can’t afford to keep our ticket offices open, but we can afford to build a new line in Turkey?’ Well he's been panned for this strangely enough. The pedants of Twitter have managed to get a Community Note raised on this, proper wet lettuce stuff, saying ‘The U.K. government is not paying for a railway in Turkey. It is underwriting a loan by three banks which is reinsured by Italy and Austria. This is part of an export finance deal on the condition that U.K. exporters supply components, engineering, electronic infrastructure.’ So, we’re helping them build a railway then? Both with finance and with exported supplies of components, engineering and electronic infrastructure?
