Palermo’s main airport was temporarily closed and more than 1,500 people were evacuated as wildfires raged in the Sicilian city on Tuesday, July 25. Footage posted to Twitter shows a blaze along a highway en route to Palermo Airport, which reopened shortly before 11 am, with limited flights available. Palermo Today said the city was “in the grip of fires for 24 hours.” The outlet reported an 88-year-old woman died after fires blocked emergency services from reaching her home.
