Bay Area Drivers May Soon Get Automatic Tickets for Going 11 mph Over Speed Limit

Bay Area residents, beware! If you're already fed up with the myriad of inconveniences plaguing your commutes, here's another one to add to your list. In an attempt to reign in the local "Fast and Furious" wannabes, legislators are pondering a bill that would automate speeding tickets for drivers going 11 mph over the speed limit - a speed not exactly reminiscent of Vin Diesel, but hey, who's counting?

Welcome to an era where not even your speedometer can save you from a ticket, courtesy of speed limit cameras and an automated billing system. These machines, proposed under assembly Bill 645, are trained to snap pictures of the rear license plates of vehicles breaking the speed limit by a mere 11 miles per hour. No police, no negotiation, just a $50 fine in the mail. At this point, we might as well have our cars stolen just to escape this robotic bureaucracy. And this cash-harvesting system might soon be coming to major cities such as San Jose, Oakland, Glendale, Long Beach, and the city and county of San Francisco as early as January 2024. So, Californians, it might be a good time to start practicing your deep breathing exercises, or maybe even considering a relocation package.

In 2019, a whopping 26% of vehicle crashes were due to speeding drivers, according to the CDC. While it's an issue that needs addressing, are robotic overlords really the answer? Just another day in the Bay Area where governmental efficiency meets the everyday man in the most inconvenient way possible.
