A large swath of the continent is unbanked, has no internet, or a stable electrical grid, but they have found ways to use old Nokia cell phones with solar chargers to send and receive Bitcoin through SMS text messages using a company named BitNob. Rampant inflation of local currencies has made Bitcoin a viable alternative to fiat currency.
